Volunteerism is a core value of Limmud NY. Our conference is a participatory event, a communal collaboration, and a celebration of what is possible when we all work together. The conference you’re attending is created entirely by a dedicated and passionate team of volunteers (Limmud NY only has one full-time paid employee), and we need your participation to ensure that it is a success!
How Can I Help?
There are many opportunities to share your skills both leading up to the conference and during the conference in order to help create our community. We also have opportunities throughout the year to support the operations of the organization.

Register for the Limmud NY Conference Maker volunteer development program and receive a significant discount on your registration fee. Makers commit to a significant volunteer role with Limmud NY, either as a member of one of our conference planning teams, or by giving at least two hours of on-site volunteering each day at the conference (total of 8 hours). If you’re interested, select one of the Conference Maker packages when you register and someone will be in touch about how you can join the team!
Join a Conference Planning Team
Teams meet montly or bi-weekly to talk about ideas and do work. Each team is led by a chair or two co-chairs who sit on the Conference Steering Committee. Meet the lay-leaders who are creating Limmud NY 2017!
Create programming for kids and families, and make sure that Limmud NY is fun for our youngest participants.
Promote Limmud NY to the diverse Jewish communities of the New York region (and beyond!).
Participant Care Team
Ensure that all of our participants feel at home while they are a part of our community.
Design and implement the Limmud NY program – invite presenters, craft the schedule, and coordinate logistics.
Shabbat and Jewish Ritual Team
Foster a sense of spirituality and Shabbat peace at Limmud NY – select service leaders and ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed.
Work On a Discreet Pre-Conference Task
In addition to the planning teams, we also have other specific work that needs to be done. If you have applicable skills – or would like to learn how to do one of these roles – please be in touch!
Program Guide Proofreading
Help to ensure that our session listings and presenter bios are clear, grammatically correct, and free of typos.
Match roommates with each other and assign participants to hotel rooms while making sure that all participant’s needs and requests are honored (to the best of our abilities).
Solicit In-Kind Donations
Help us secure product donations from companies interested in promoting their brand to our engaged audience.
Volunteer Opportunities at the Conference
By signing up for a volunteer shift and joining one of our four volunteer squads, you make an important contribution to creating the Limmud NY experience for our entire community. Volunteer shifts are typically two hours long. At the beginning of your shift, report to Volunteer Central in the atrium for a brief squad meeting where you’ll meet your Squad Leader (a Steering Committee, Board, or Staff member) and fellow squad members, and learn about your squad’s tasks.
Volunteer shift sign-up will be available when the conference program is announced in early January.
The Schlepping Squad helps make sure that all of our sessions, and the conference as a whole, is set up and cleaned up properly. Schleppers are tasked with moving supplies and gear from one place to another, setting up rooms for sessions, and making sure we leave the Hyatt in better condition than we found it.
The Hospitality Squad is responsible for making sure all of our participants are cared for. Hospitalitarians can be found in the corridors between sessions helping to guide participants along the way. They may welcome you when you arrive and bid you safe travels when you depart. They’ll also be stationed in the dining hall to assist participants with special needs.
The Programming Squad makes sure that our program runs smoothly. With more than 300 sessions throughout the weekend, Programmers ensure that our presenters’ needs are met, troubleshoot programming issues, and provide support for our on-site office and AV team.
The Help Desk Squad makes certain that all of our participants have the information they need to make the most of their Limmud NY experience. Help Deskniks staff the Limmud NY Help Desk in the atrium and answer participants’ questions throughout the conference.
