Celebrating Jewish life and learning in all of its diversity, by bringing together Jews of all backgrounds and all ages.
Limmud is Hebrew for “learning” and Limmud NY is devoted to Jewish learning in every conceivable form, from learning Torah to learning how to make gefilte fish; from Middle Eastern politics to Jewish Kirtan chanting; from Refuseniks to slam poetry; from Schneerson to Seinfeld; from Kol Nidre to Klezmer. At Limmud NY, everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn.
We value the rich diversity among Jews, and so we seek to create cross-communal and inter-generational experiences. By learning together – across the diversity of Jewish life – we are able to build bridges with those who are different than ourselves, and in so doing, strengthen the Jewish community. We hope that Limmud NY will be a space where spiritual, emotional, and intellectual connections are made.
Limmud NY is a participatory experience. Everyone has an important contribution to make – we are all responsible for each other and for the community we create together. Our countless volunteers are empowered to oversee every aspect of the event, beginning a year in advance and continuing on-site throughout the weekend. Limmud NY is a participatory event, a communal collaboration, a celebration of what is possible when we all work together.
At Limmud NY, no one is more important than anyone else, and we actively seek to break down the hierarchies found in everyday life. We recognize and appreciate that ‘arguments for the sake of heaven’ can make a positive contribution to furthering our learning and understanding – however, we expect that all participants will be respectful to one another, and treat all members of our community with kavod (honor) since we are all created betzelem Elohim (in the image of God).
